South-facing slopes and beds against a masonry wall or south-facing fence absorb and radiate heat, creating a warmer microclimate that may let you plant several days earlier. Low-lying areas, open fields away from structures, and spots near bodies of cold water can experience frosts noticeably later in spring than surrounding land. In most of the continental U.S. and Canada, that pushes the expected harvest dangerously close to the first fall frost. Starting indoors gives you a significant head start and is the standard approach wherever the season is less than 180 days.
Days-to-maturity figures printed on seed packets and used in this calculator represent average performance under ideal conditions: consistent moisture, adequate fertility, and warm temperatures near the crop’s optimum range. Actual harvest timing shifts with soil temperature, variety, cloud cover, heat stress, and pest pressure. A cool, wet summer can add two to four weeks to tomato ripening time. A hot early summer can accelerate lettuce bolting. Use harvest date estimates for planning succession plantings and scheduling, not as precise predictions.
