Understanding Honey Yield: What Actually Affects Your Harvest
Honey Yield by Region and Hive Type
Honey yield varies enormously depending on where your bees forage and what hive system you run. A well-managed Langstroth 10-frame hive in an average region might produce 30–60 lbs of surplus honey per year. In prime forage areas — basswood forests, agricultural clover fields, tulip poplar stands in the mid-Atlantic — that same hive can push 80–100 lbs or more. In cold northern climates or drought-prone areas with poor forage diversity, expect 10–30 lbs, and some years the bees may produce little or no surplus at all.
The Langstroth 10-frame remains the most common commercial format and delivers the highest gross yield per hive due to sheer volume capacity. An 8-frame Langstroth is lighter and easier to manage but holds roughly 20% less honey per box. Warré hives use smaller boxes stacked from the bottom and are preferred by natural beekeepers; yield per hive is typically 20–40 lbs when conditions are good. Top bar hives produce honey in comb sections rather than removable frames; extraction is less efficient and annual yield typically runs 15–30 lbs of surplus.
Capped vs. Uncapped Honey and Moisture Content
Bees cap honey with beeswax once the moisture content drops below about 18.5% — the point at which it is shelf-stable and will not ferment. Uncapped honey may still be ripe if the moisture reads under 18.5% on a refractometer, but harvesting frames that are less than 80% capped is risky for hobbyists without testing equipment. High-moisture honey (above 18.6%) will ferment in the jar within weeks. For this calculator, the capped percentage slider is the most direct proxy for frame readiness; below 75% capped, most beekeepers should wait another week or two before pulling supers.
When to Harvest
Harvest timing is driven by your local nectar flows. In most of the United States there is a primary spring flow (April–June, depending on latitude) and often a secondary summer or fall flow. Southern beekeepers may get three distinct harvests in a good year. The safest approach is to inspect supers after the main flow ends: if frames are at least 80% capped, pull them. Leave enough honey in the brood boxes — at minimum 40–60 lbs going into winter — so the colony survives without supplemental feeding.
Beeswax Yield
During extraction, bees build comb that must be cut or scraped from frames. Rendered beeswax yield runs approximately 1 lb for every 6–8 lbs of honey extracted, depending on how much wax capping is removed and whether you run cut-comb or extracted honey. At retail, raw beeswax sells for $8–$15 per lb, so even modest operations accumulate meaningful wax value. Wax can be rendered in a solar melter, a double boiler, or a steam melter; always strain through cheesecloth to remove propolis and debris before selling or using.
Extraction Methods
Radial extractors spin frames to throw honey outward by centrifugal force without damaging comb, allowing reuse of drawn frames (a significant labor and time savings for the bees). Tangential extractors are less expensive but require flipping frames mid-spin. For very small operations, crush-and-strain extracts comb and honey together, producing more beeswax but destroying the drawn comb. Flow Hive systems allow honey to drain without uncapping, which reduces extraction labor but requires careful management to avoid moisture issues and crystallization in the cells.

A fully drawn and capped 10-frame Langstroth deep super typically holds 25–35 lbs of honey; a medium super holds 20–28 lbs. These numbers assume standard-depth frames fully loaded with capped comb. In practice, beekeepers often pull supers that are 75–90% capped, so real-world yield per super typically lands in the 18–30 lb range depending on frame depth and capping percentage. An 8-frame super holds roughly 20–25% less than its 10-frame equivalent at the same capping level.
Can I really get honey from a first-year hive?
It depends heavily on your starting method and local nectar flows. A package installed in spring may or may not produce surplus honey in its first season — the colony needs to build population, draw comb, and store winter reserves before any surplus goes into supers. Nucleus colonies (nucs) installed in early spring in a good forage region sometimes produce a small harvest (5–20 lbs) in year one. Established swarms caught during or just before a major flow can also produce surprising amounts quickly. Most beekeepers plan for zero surplus in year one and treat any honey taken as a bonus.
Why does my neighbor's hive produce so much more honey than mine?
Several factors can cause dramatic yield differences between hives in the same yard. Genetics matters enormously — Italian bees are prolific honey producers, while Russian or Carniolan bees may build up more slowly. Queen age and quality directly affects brood production and worker population at peak flow. Varroa mite load, if unmanaged, can collapse a colony's foraging workforce right before the main flow. Hive configuration also plays a role: a colony that fills its brood boxes with honey instead of brood has less room to expand and fewer foragers to bring in nectar. Regular inspections and proactive management — adding supers before the colony feels crowded — consistently produce the best yields.
What is the best way to store harvested honey long-term?
Raw honey stored in sealed glass or food-grade plastic containers at room temperature (60–80°F) has an essentially indefinite shelf life due to its low moisture content and antimicrobial properties. Crystallization is natural and does not mean the honey has spoiled — gently warm crystallized honey in a water bath at 95–100°F to reliquefy without damaging flavor or enzymes. Avoid storing honey above 80°F for extended periods, which accelerates enzyme degradation and color darkening. Never refrigerate honey, as cold temperatures accelerate crystallization. Keep lids tight to prevent moisture absorption, which can eventually lead to fermentation even in properly harvested honey.
