Getting cattle to target slaughter weight efficiently is the difference between a profitable operation and one that loses money on every head. Average Daily Gain (ADG) is the single most important performance metric in a beef operation — it determines how long cattle occupy pasture or bunk space, how much feed they consume, and when you pull the trigger on marketing. This calculator translates your breed, production type, and feed program into a realistic timeline and feed cost estimate.
Average Daily Gain varies significantly depending on how cattle are managed. Grass-fed and pastured cattle typically gain 1.5–2.0 lbs per day when forage quality is adequate, but gain rates drop sharply in summer slumps or on dormant winter pasture. These cattle take 18–24 months or longer to reach slaughter weight, but feed costs are near zero if you own the land.
Stocker and backgrounder operations sit in the middle: calves bought light (400–600 lbs) are grown on grass or wheat pasture to 700–900 lbs before going to the feedlot. ADG of 2.0–2.5 lbs per day is the target. Stockers are highly sensitive to forage availability and weather — a dry spring cuts gains dramatically and can turn a profitable enterprise upside down fast.
Grain-finished feedlot cattle achieve the highest ADG — typically 2.5–3.5 lbs per day on a high-energy corn or barley-based Total Mixed Ration (TMR). At that pace, a 750-lb yearling reaches 1,200–1,250 lbs in roughly 130–180 days. Conventional beef quality grades (Choice/Prime) are largely a feedlot product; grass-finished cattle rarely grade above Select without extensive time on high-quality cool-season pasture in the fall.
Breed influences ADG noticeably. Continental-cross cattle (including Angus and Hereford-influence crosses) tend to have the best feed efficiency and growth rates of commercial breeds. British crosses like Shorthorn and Devon gain slightly slower but often grade out exceptionally well. Dairy crosses — especially Holstein steers — can achieve high raw ADG in the feedlot but carry lower carcass value. Longhorn-influence cattle tend toward slower, leaner gains and are best suited to grass-only programs where their hardiness and low-input maintenance outweigh their slower gain rate.
Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) — lbs of feed required per lb of gain — is a key cost driver in any grain program. Grass-finished cattle have an apparent FCR of roughly 8:1 (forage-based). Stocker programs using quality pasture run 6–7:1. Feedlot-finished cattle average 5.5–6.5:1 on a dry-matter basis, with the best-performing cattle hitting 5:1 or below. Improving FCR by even 0.5 units on a 100-head pen can represent thousands of dollars in saved feed cost.
For conventional fed cattle marketed to a packer, the target live weight is 1,150–1,350 lbs, with most steers marketed at 1,200–1,250 lbs. Heifers typically market 50–75 lbs lighter. Grass-finished cattle are often marketed lighter — 900–1,100 lbs live — because fatter, heavier grass-fed carcasses can draw yield-grade discounts at some processors. Direct-marketed whole or half beef can vary widely based on customer preference and your local processor's capacity.
Grain-finished cattle placed at 750 lbs can reach 1,200 lbs in 130–180 days on a high-energy TMR. Grass-finished cattle starting at the same weight may take an additional 6–12 months depending on forage quality and season, often finishing at 18–30 months of age total. Some producers use a "grass-fed, grain-finished" hybrid approach — backgrounding on pasture and then doing a short 60–90 day grain finish — to speed throughput while still achieving Choice grades.
Well-managed commercial feedlots targeting 3.0+ lbs ADG on high-grain diets typically see FCR of 5.5–6.5:1 on a dry-matter basis. First-time or small-scale operators with less optimized rations and more pen-stress variability should budget for 7:1 or higher. Heifers are generally 10–15% less efficient than steers. Any FCR calculation for grass programs should use forage dry matter, not fresh weight — fresh pasture grass is 70–85% moisture, so a cow consuming 35 lbs fresh forage is only eating roughly 5–7 lbs dry matter.
Market signals should drive your target weight. If the packer grid shows heavy discounts over 900 lbs hot carcass weight (roughly 1,250 lbs live), pull cattle at 1,200 lbs even if ADG is still strong — you're feeding pounds that won't be paid for. In direct-marketing beef, customer preference often favors smaller packages from lighter animals (900–1,100 lbs live), which allows earlier marketing, faster cash flow, and lower total feed cost per animal. Always know your grid and your market before setting a target weight.
