Soil Testing Before You Plant: The Step Most Hunters Skip

The single highest-return investment in food plot management costs $15 and most hunters never make it. A basic soil test from your county extension office tells you soil pH, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium levels — and gives you a lime and fertilizer recommendation specific to the crop you want to plant. Without this information you're guessing, and guessing wrong wastes money on lime and fertilizer that either isn't needed or isn't in the right amounts.

The target pH for most food plot species is 6.2 to 7.0. Clover wants pH 6.5 or higher — below 6.0 it grows weakly and fixes almost no nitrogen. Brassicas perform in a slightly wider range but struggle below pH 5.5. Winter wheat and rye are more tolerant of acidic conditions, performing acceptably down to pH 5.5, but still do better with corrected pH. Corn and soybeans both want pH 6.0 to 6.5 for optimal nutrient availability.

Lime takes time to work — agricultural limestone typically needs 6 to 12 months to fully raise pH in most soils. If your pH is significantly below target, plan to lime the fall before your intended planting, not the same week. Pelletized lime works faster than ground limestone but costs more per pound of calcium carbonate equivalent. For plots that are already close (pH 5.8–6.2), pelletized lime applied a few weeks before planting can provide meaningful pH improvement within the growing season. For severely acidic soils (pH below 5.5), apply lime in the fall and plan to plant the following year for best results.

Cool-Season vs. Warm-Season Food Plots: Species by Time of Year

Matching species to planting season is the most important decision in food plot planning. Cool-season plots provide the nutrition whitetails need during hunting season, from early fall through winter. Warm-season plots provide high-protein forage during antler development and fawn raising in summer.

Cool-season species (plant late summer / early fall, typically August–September): Ladino and red clover, chicory, brassicas (turnips, rape, radish), winter wheat, winter rye, and oats. These are your primary hunting-season plots. Clover and chicory are perennials that come back year after year. Brassicas, wheat, rye, and oats are annuals that must be replanted each season. Brassicas are particularly attractive to deer after the first frost, which converts starches to sugars in the leaves and bulbs — a brassica plot planted in August is often ignored until October, then hammered from November through January.

Warm-season species (plant spring after last frost, typically April–May): Soybeans, corn, sorghum/sudan, and warm-season clovers like crimson clover. Soybeans are the gold standard warm-season food plot species across most of whitetail range — the beans provide high-protein summer forage and the standing grain is a major draw from September through winter if the plot has enough acreage to hold deer pressure. Corn is attractive year-round but primarily as a fall and winter carbohydrate source. Sorghum/sudan grows fast, provides excellent summer cover and forage, and can be managed as a warm-season screen or standalone plot.

Germination Timing by Species

Knowing germination timing helps you plan planting dates around expected rain and temperature windows. Clover germinates in 7–14 days at soil temperatures above 50°F — it's forgiving of slightly cool soils. Brassicas germinate in 3–7 days at 45–85°F soil temperature and are some of the fastest-establishing food plot species, which is why they're popular for hunters who plant late. Winter wheat and rye germinate in 5–10 days and are extremely cold-tolerant once established, making them reliable fall choices even with late planting. Chicory germinates in 10–21 days and is slower to establish than clover, so it rewards early planting. Soybeans germinate in 5–10 days with warm soil (60°F minimum, 65°F preferred) and are sensitive to cold — planting too early risks poor germination and seedling mortality. Corn germinates in 5–12 days at soil temperatures of 50°F and above, though germination is most uniform above 55°F.

Plot Shape, Placement, and Deer Movement

A food plot that deer can't reach safely is a food plot deer won't use during daylight. The best-performing plots from a hunting standpoint share several characteristics. First, they have a defined entry and exit. Deer approach food sources from downwind — they circle, checking the wind before committing. Long, narrow plots (2:1 to 4:1 length-to-width ratio, oriented crosswind to your prevailing wind direction) force deer to expose themselves at a chokepoint rather than entering from multiple unpredictable directions. Irregular shapes with fingers or alcoves create natural pinch points that funnel deer movement.

Second, they're connected to bedding cover. A plot surrounded by hardwoods on all four sides with no travel corridors to nearby bedding is a nighttime feeding area. The best plots have at least one edge that backs up to thick thermal cover — swamps, dense young timber, switchgrass — with a natural or created travel corridor connecting bedding to the plot edge. Deer will use that corridor both morning and evening, creating shot opportunities on the travel route in addition to the plot itself.

Third, they're the right size. Half an acre to two acres is the sweet spot for most hunting food plots — large enough to support a deer population but small enough that you can cover it with a single stand location. Plots larger than three to four acres are difficult to hunt effectively with archery equipment and require multiple stand locations to cover effectively. For gun hunting, larger plots (five to ten acres) work well, particularly for open hardwood settings where sight lines are long.

Mowing to Control Weeds in Clover Plots

Clover is the most popular perennial food plot species for a reason: it produces high-protein forage from spring through fall, it fixes its own nitrogen, and a well-managed plot can last five to seven years before needing renovation. But the number-one reason clover plots fail is weed pressure, and the remedy is almost always simpler than hunters expect: mow at the right height at the right time.

Clover plots should be mowed when weeds begin to overtop the clover, typically when the canopy is 8–10 inches tall. Mow back to 4–6 inches, leaving the clover to recover and shade out competing weeds. Do not mow shorter than 4 inches — clover needs leaf surface area to photosynthesize and recover after mowing. In a typical growing season you'll mow two to four times from May through September. Each mowing temporarily reduces palatability and deer use (deer don't like the smell of freshly cut vegetation), but the plot rebounds in 7–14 days and browsing pressure often resumes quickly.

Grass weeds — fescue, crabgrass, bermudagrass — are the most difficult challenge in clover plots because standard broadleaf herbicides that protect clover will kill grasses but can't be applied economically to all grass species. Select herbicides (clethodim, sethoxydim) applied when grasses are actively growing will selectively kill most annual and perennial grasses without injuring clover or other broadleaf species. Apply at labeled rates when grasses are 4–6 inches tall, before they become dense. One well-timed grass-selective herbicide application in late spring or early summer, combined with consistent mowing, keeps most clover plots productive for several years without renovation.

Annual vs. Perennial Food Plots: Planning Your Rotation

Annual plots must be replanted each year — brassicas, winter wheat, rye, oats, corn, and soybeans are all annuals. They require a full seedbed preparation each season but give you the flexibility to rotate species from year to year, which helps manage soil disease pressure and weeds. Rotating brassicas and grains is particularly important: planting brassicas in the same field more than two years in a row invites clubroot and other soil-borne diseases that can devastate the stand. A simple rotation of brassicas one year, cereal grains the next, then back to brassicas gives both species a fresh seedbed while naturally breaking disease and weed cycles.

Perennial plots (clover, chicory, alfalfa) are established once and maintained through mowing and occasional fertilization. The establishment year is critical — a bad first year often means the plot never reaches its potential. Weed competition during establishment is the biggest risk. Many experienced food plotters use a nurse crop — oats or winter rye at low seeding rates — to stabilize the seedbed and reduce weed pressure while clover establishes, then mow the nurse crop down before it shades the clover out. After year one, a properly established clover or chicory plot requires minimal intervention beyond mowing and annual fertilization.

There's no single best species — the most productive food plot programs use a combination of cool-season and warm-season plots, perennial and annual species, and plantings timed to provide nutrition across the entire year. If forced to pick one species, ladino clover is the consensus choice among biologists and experienced hunters: it's palatable across the entire growing season, fixes its own nitrogen, is attractive to deer at near-maximum levels of nutritional quality from spring through fall, and persists for multiple years with basic management. For hunting-season draw specifically, brassicas (turnips and rape) take over after first frost when clover goes semi-dormant and are often the highest-traffic plots on a property from November through January.

Can I broadcast seed without a tractor?

Yes. Many successful food plots are established with nothing more than a hand-crank broadcast spreader and basic seedbed preparation. The critical step is ensuring good seed-to-soil contact. Broadcasting onto bare, roughed-up soil (disturbed with a hand rake, ATV disk, or even dragging a section of chain-link fence) gives much better establishment than broadcasting onto undisturbed ground. Small clover and brassica plots of a quarter acre or less can be hand-broadcast effectively. Interseeding (overseeding) clover into an existing thin grain stand or lightly grazed area works well in late winter or early spring using a technique called "frost seeding."
