The C:N Ratio Explained
The carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C:N) is the single most important number in composting. Microbes that break down organic matter need roughly 25–30 parts carbon for every 1 part nitrogen to thrive. Too much carbon (ratio above 35:1) and decomposition slows dramatically — the pile stays cool and barely shrinks for months. Too much nitrogen (ratio below 20:1) and you get a smelly, slimy mess as excess nitrogen escapes as ammonia. Hitting that 25–30:1 sweet spot gives you fast, odor-free decomposition.
Browns vs. Greens
Browns are carbon-rich materials: dry leaves, straw, cardboard, wood chips, paper, and sawdust. They typically carry a C:N ratio around 60:1 or higher. Greens are nitrogen-rich: fresh grass clippings, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, fresh manure, and garden trimmings average around 15:1. Because browns run so high in carbon, you generally need roughly 2–3 parts browns by volume for every 1 part greens to land in the ideal range. This calculator uses a blended average (browns at 60:1, greens at 15:1) to estimate your pile's C:N ratio from the volumes you enter.
Hot vs. Cold Composting
Hot (active) composting means managing your pile to sustain internal temperatures between 130°F and 160°F. At these temperatures microbial activity explodes, weed seeds and pathogens are destroyed, and you can have finished compost in as little as 4–8 weeks with weekly turning. Cold (passive) composting means building a pile and largely leaving it alone. Decomposition still happens, but it takes 3–6 months or longer depending on pile size and climate. Cold composting requires less labor but does not reliably kill weed seeds.
Turning Frequency and Moisture
Oxygen is the other key ingredient. Turning the pile introduces fresh air, which re-energizes microbial populations and drives up internal temperature. Weekly turning with a hot pile produces the fastest results. Bi-weekly turning extends the timeline to 8–12 weeks but cuts labor roughly in half. Monthly turning in a hot pile starts to resemble cold composting in timeline — expect 3–4 months. A pile that is never turned essentially cold-composts regardless of starting temperature.
Moisture matters just as much. A well-functioning pile should feel like a wrung-out sponge — damp throughout but not dripping. The ideal moisture content is 40–60% by weight. Too dry and microbes go dormant; too wet and you create anaerobic conditions that produce foul odors and slow decomposition. If your pile is dry, water it while turning. If it smells like ammonia or sulfur, it is too wet — add more dry browns and turn to aerate.
What to Expect for Yield
Finished compost volume is typically 40–60% of the original pile volume due to water loss, carbon dioxide off-gassing, and material consolidation. This calculator uses 50% as a practical midpoint estimate. A 4×4×3 ft pile (48 cu ft) will yield roughly 24 cu ft of finished compost — about two full wheelbarrow loads of rich, dark, earthy-smelling amendment ready to work into garden beds.

What is the ideal C:N ratio for a compost pile?
The ideal C:N ratio is between 25:1 and 30:1. Below 20:1, excess nitrogen escapes as ammonia gas and the pile may smell. Above 35:1, microbes run out of nitrogen and decomposition becomes very slow. You do not need to measure ratios precisely — simply using 2–3 parts browns by volume for every 1 part greens will put most piles in range.
How do I know if my compost is finished?
Finished compost is dark brown to black, crumbly, and smells like fresh earth — not like manure, ammonia, or rotting food. You should not be able to identify the original materials. A simple test: put a handful in a sealed bag for 3 days. If it smells foul when you open it, it still needs more time. Finished compost will smell neutral or slightly earthy.
Can I compost meat, dairy, or cooked food?
In a hot, actively managed pile that regularly reaches 140°F+, meat and dairy can be composted safely. However, most backyard composters skip these materials because an improperly managed pile will attract rodents and pests and produce strong odors. Stick to fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, and garden waste if you are new to composting or use a cold pile.
Why is my compost pile not heating up?
Three things kill pile heat: too many browns (carbon excess), not enough moisture, or insufficient mass. A pile needs to be at least 3×3×3 ft to generate and retain heat. Check moisture first — squeeze a handful; if no water comes out and it feels dry, add water. If moisture is fine, add a nitrogen source (fresh grass clippings, blood meal, or fresh kitchen scraps) and turn the pile to reintroduce oxygen. You should see temperatures rise within 24–48 hours.
