Skirting is the first thing you do after shearing: you lay the fleece out on a skirting table (a wire mesh or slatted surface that lets debris fall through) and remove the edges. The sections you're pulling off are the belly wool, the leg wool, the heavily tagged or manure-stained sections around the back end, and any large chunks of vegetable matter — burrs, seeds, chaff — that have worked their way into the fleece. These sections are either worthless or actively damage fiber processing equipment at a mill, so buyers and spinners don't want them.
What remains after skirting is the prime fleece — the back and sides, with clean, long staples and the best fiber diameter. A well-managed flock on good pasture with a low VM (vegetable matter) burden will lose only 15–20% to skirting. A flock that has been grazing weedy pasture full of burdock, foxtail, or thistle can lose 30–40% of the raw weight before you even start washing. This is why pasture management and hay quality matter for wool production as much as for meat and milk — the fiber you can't sell is a direct cost.

VM content — expressed as a percentage of clean fiber weight — is one of the most important quality factors for raw wool pricing. Fine wool buyers and fiber mills will discount or refuse fleeces with VM above 2–3%. That means clean hay feeders that don't drop chaff on their backs, well-maintained pasture free of seedy weeds, and avoiding range areas with heavy burdock or foxtail populations during the months before shearing.
The traditional advice is to shear in spring, after the worst cold has passed but before hot weather begins. This timing makes sense for several reasons: wool growth is naturally at its heaviest at the end of the winter growth phase, the sheep don't need the insulation as much once temperatures rise, and freshly shorn ewes are easier to assist during lambing if the timing lines up.
Pre-lambing shearing — shearing two to four weeks before expected lambing — has become common in commercial operations because it offers real practical advantages. Shorn ewes seek shelter more readily and eat more, improving their body condition going into lambing. Raw, unwashed fleece needs to be stored in a way that prevents moth damage, keeps moisture out, and allows some air circulation to prevent overheating of the lanolin (which can go rancid and create an unpleasant smell that affects fiber quality). The worst thing you can do is stuff fleeces in sealed plastic bags — condensation builds up, the lanolin sweats, and you can end up with a moldy, rancid fleece within weeks.
The standard approach is to roll each fleece cut-side out (the side that was against the skin goes to the outside), tie it loosely with a piece of the fleece itself or a natural fiber twine, and store in a breathable bag — mesh bags, old pillow cases, or paper feed sacks all work. Most breeds need shearing once a year. Wool grows continuously and does not shed naturally in domestic sheep (unlike wild ancestors that had seasonal shedding). If sheep are not shorn, the fleece grows to the point where it becomes a welfare problem — extremely heavy fleeces cause overheating, mobility problems, and in wet climates, flystrike (blowfly larvae infesting the wool and skin). A small number of breeds have been selected for reduced wool growth or natural shedding: Katahdin, Dorper, and Barbados Blackbelly are hair sheep that shed seasonally and don't require shearing.
