Nut butters (peanut, almond, sunflower) deliver around 160–170 calories per ounce, almost all from fat and protein. Single-serve packets keep better in the field than a jar and don't require utensils. A packet with a pack of crackers is one of the fastest 400-calorie lunches you can put together. Olive oil is the single most calorie-dense packable food at roughly 250 calories per ounce — a small 3-oz flask of olive oil added to a freeze-dried meal turns 400 calories into nearly 700. For hunters dealing with serious cold weather calorie deficits, adding olive oil or coconut oil to every cooked meal is one of the most effective and lightweight calorie boosts available.
Hard cheese (parmesan, aged cheddar, manchego) runs 110–130 calories per ounce and is one of the few genuine protein-fat foods that keeps without refrigeration for 5–7 days in moderate temperatures. Wax-coated parmesan wheels are the traditional backcountry choice. Jerky and meat sticks average 70–100 calories per ounce — good protein density but not as calorie-dense as fat sources. Dark chocolate (70%+) delivers 160 calories per ounce, keeps well in cool weather, and pulls double duty as a morale item. Whole oats are among the most calorie-efficient breakfast foods by both weight and cost — a 4-oz dry serving gives you roughly 450 calories, and instant oats require only boiling water. Nuts (walnuts, almonds, cashews, mixed) run 160–185 calories per ounce and are the foundation of any serious trail mix strategy.
For base camp trips where weight doesn't matter, eggs and bacon are the right call for breakfast: high satiety, good protein, and the fat from bacon helps fuel long days in cold temperatures. Bring eggs in a hard-sided container or pre-crack them into a wide-mouth jar and keep them in the cooler. The danger zone for bacterial growth is 40°F to 140°F. In camp, this means: food in your cooler must stay below 40°F, and food you're cooking must reach safe internal temperatures — 165°F for poultry, 145°F for whole cuts of beef, pork, and fish, and 160°F for ground meat. A digital instant-read thermometer is one of the most useful and lightest items you can pack. Guessing whether game meat is done is how you end up sick three days into a ten-day hunt.
Wild game meat presents specific considerations. Field-dressed deer, elk, and other big game must be cooled to below 40°F within the first few hours after harvest to prevent bacterial growth in the body cavity. In warm fall weather (above 50°F ambient), this is the single biggest food safety problem in hunting camp. Keep a thermometer in the body cavity, use a game bag to allow airflow, and get it on ice or into cold air as fast as possible. For fish: clean them within an hour of catch and keep them on ice until cooking. A whole fish kept on ice in a cooler is good for 2–3 days. Fillets in a zip-lock bag directly on ice last slightly less. Never leave cleaned fish in warm water or in a creel in the sun.
In bear country — which includes most of the western U.S., much of Canada, and significant portions of the Southeast and Northeast — how you store food is not optional. In designated wilderness areas and many national forests, hard-sided bear-resistant containers or hanging food 10+ feet off the ground and 4+ feet from any vertical surface are legal requirements, not suggestions. Violations can result in fines and, more importantly, a habituated bear that will be killed by wildlife managers.
The practical rules for any camp in black bear habitat: never sleep with food in your tent or sleeping bag, never cook near your tent, never leave food or scented items (toothpaste, soap, lip balm, trash) unattended, and store all of the above at least 200 feet from where you sleep. Bears have been documented detecting food odors from over a mile away. A hard-sided bear canister approved by the agency managing the land you're camping on is the easiest compliant solution for backpack trips. Freeze-dried meals are lower odor than fresh food, which is one practical advantage for backcountry trips in bear country beyond just weight savings. Store empty freeze-dried pouches in your bear canister or hang bag, not scattered around camp — bears investigate smells, not just visible food.
Water boils at a lower temperature as elevation increases. At sea level it boils at 212°F. At 5,000 feet it boils at 203°F. At 10,000 feet it boils at 194°F. At 14,000 feet (common in high-altitude elk and goat country) it boils at about 186°F. This has real consequences for camp cooking.
Pasta and rice take significantly longer to cook at altitude because the boiling water is cooler than the recipe assumes — what takes 8 minutes at sea level may take 12–15 minutes at 10,000 feet, and the result may still be slightly undercooked. Freeze-dried meals, which just need rehydration, are largely unaffected since you're adding boiling water to the pouch rather than boiling food in it. Leavened baked goods (cornbread, camp biscuits) rise faster and can over-expand before the structure sets, leading to collapse — reduce leavening by about 25% and increase liquid slightly for high-altitude baking. Boiling as a water purification method still works at altitude, but you need to maintain a rolling boil for 1 minute at elevations below 6,500 feet and 3 minutes above 6,500 feet per CDC guidance.
Fuel consumption increases at altitude. Canister stoves and white gas stoves both burn more fuel per boil at higher elevation and in cold temperatures. Budget 20–30% more fuel than you'd estimate at sea level for a high-altitude trip in cold weather. A practical test: your standard one-liter boil that costs X minutes of burn time at home will take noticeably longer above 8,000 feet in cold air. This affects your total fuel carry, not just cooking time.
A well-packed cooler holds temperature dramatically longer than a poorly packed one. The first principle: pre-chill everything. Put your cooler in a cold garage or fill it with ice 12–24 hours before loading food. A cooler that starts at ambient temperature loses a huge portion of its thermal capacity on the first day just bringing itself down to temperature. Pre-chill your food and drinks before packing. Room-temperature drinks on ice are the single biggest cooler killer in camp.
Ice strategy: block ice lasts significantly longer than cubed ice — a 10-pound block will outlast 10 pounds of cubed ice by roughly 2:1. Dry ice lasts longest of all (3–4 days in a quality cooler) but requires ventilation and insulated gloves and will freeze food directly adjacent to it. A practical approach for a week-long hunt is a layer of block ice on the bottom, food on top of that, and a bag of cubed ice on top to fill gaps and for drink access. Minimize headspace inside the cooler — empty air space accelerates temperature loss.
Separate your cooler categories if possible: one cooler for drinks (opened constantly), one for food (opened only at mealtimes). A constantly-opened drink cooler loses temperature dramatically faster than a food cooler opened twice daily. Wrap your cooler in a moving blanket or emergency space blanket if it will sit in direct sun in the back of a truck — radiant heat from sun on a dark cooler lid raises internal temperature quickly even on a quality unit. Keep it in shade whenever possible.
Ice estimate used in this calculator: 1.5 lbs of ice per person per day for a well-managed base camp cooler with quality insulation. Add more ice for warm weather, less for cold. In temperatures below 40°F ambient, a shaded cooler may not need ice at all for the first day or two — nature is doing the work.
A 180-pound man walking 8–10 miles in steep terrain with a 30-pound pack burns approximately 3,500–4,500 calories per day. Cold weather adds to the burn because your body expends energy maintaining core temperature. If you are elk hunting in the Rockies in October, covering significant elevation gain each day, 4,000 calories is a realistic minimum and some hunters need more. The most common mistake is underestimating calorie burn on hard-terrain hunting trips and coming back with leftover food but running a significant calorie deficit by day four — which manifests as fatigue, poor decision-making, and elevated injury risk. Bring more than you think you need.
Freeze-dried meals, nut butter packets, instant oatmeal, hard cheese, jerky, nuts, olive oil, dark chocolate, instant coffee, and instant mashed potatoes. This combination gives you calorie density in the 100–160 cal/oz range with no refrigeration required. Two freeze-dried pouches per person per dinner (combined ~500–600 calories per pouch before adding olive oil) covers the heavy calorie demand of evening. Breakfast is instant oatmeal with nut butter mixed in and a coffee. Lunch is walking food: bars, jerky, cheese, nuts. The addition of olive oil to every hot meal is the single most effective weight-per-calorie optimization you can make on a backpack trip. Total pack weight for food should target 1.5 lbs/person/day at high activity on a carefully planned trip, or 1.75 lbs/person/day for a less optimized kit.
Hard cheeses: 5–7 days in cool weather, 2–3 days in warm weather. Cooked game meat: 2–4 hours in the danger zone (40–140°F) before bacteria become a concern — refrigerate or freeze leftovers promptly. Dried foods (jerky, nuts, oats, rice, pasta): indefinite if kept dry and sealed. Opened canned goods: transfer to a sealed container and refrigerate; consume within 2–3 days. Freeze-dried meals in their original sealed pouches have multi-year shelf lives and last indefinitely once opened if eaten immediately. The general rule: if it smells off or has been in the danger zone for more than 2 hours, don't risk it in the field. Food poisoning 30 miles from the trailhead is a serious emergency, not just a bad night.
The absolute minimum is 1 gallon per person per day, split roughly between drinking (0.5 gallon) and cooking plus camp sanitation (0.5 gallon). In hot weather or at high exertion levels, drinking needs increase to 0.75–1 gallon per person per day just for hydration, pushing total to 1.25–1.5 gallons. At altitude, dehydration accelerates because you lose more water vapor with each breath in dry, thin air — many high-country hunters don't feel thirsty even when significantly dehydrated. The practical advice: carry a water filter or purification tablets in all but base camps with confirmed clean piped water, and plan your camp locations around reliable water sources. If you're melting snow for water, factor in fuel: it takes roughly twice as much fuel to melt and boil snow as to boil liquid water.
At heavy activity level (3,500 cal/person/day), 4 people for 5 days need roughly 70,000 total calories. At a base camp where you're driving in, that works out to approximately 90 lbs of total food. Broken down roughly: 20–25 lbs of meat (steaks, bacon, sausage, ground beef for chili), 30–35 lbs of dry goods (oats, pasta, rice, beans, flour, instant potatoes, coffee, sugar), 15 lbs of snack items (nuts, jerky, bars, chocolate, dried fruit), and 10–15 lbs of miscellaneous (oils, condiments, spices, cheese, eggs). Add 30 lbs of block ice on day one with 10 lbs of cubed ice on top, and plan to resupply ice if your camp is within reasonable distance of a store.
