Salatin's data from decades of production shows that well-managed pastured poultry actually improves pasture over time. The scratching action aerates the surface, the manure adds nitrogen and organic matter, and the chickens eat weed seeds and pest insects. The phrase "mob, then rest, then mob again" captures the principle: intensive impact for a short window, then a long recovery window. The mistake most small-scale operators make is the opposite — light continuous impact with no meaningful rest period, which degrades pasture without ever delivering enough concentrated fertility to trigger the recovery response.
For small homesteads with limited acreage, the Polyface model is instructive even if you can't replicate it at scale. The principle scales down: more positions, shorter stays, longer rest. If you only have a quarter acre for rotation, you need a smaller tractor or fewer birds to make the math work, not a faster move schedule.
A fixed-footprint chicken tractor isn't the only way to rotate chickens on pasture. Electric poultry netting — sold in standard rolls of 50, 100, or 164 feet by Premier1, Kencove, and others — lets you set up a large temporary paddock that you can reshape and relocate every few days. This approach has different tradeoffs. Electric netting requires a fence energizer (solar or plug-in), good ground conditions for the stakes, and training the birds to respect the fence. Predator protection is better than open-range but generally considered worse than a well-built tractor with hardware cloth sides — a determined dog or fox can push under electric netting if the charge is low. The practical combination many experienced operators use is a covered sleeping shelter (moved separately) combined with daytime access to a large electric-netted paddock. The warning signs that your rotation isn't working show up in the pasture before they show up in your flock. Daily moves like the Polyface model are ideal but not always practical for small homesteads. The most important thing is not to leave the tractor in one spot until the ground is bare. For a well-sized tractor (4+ sq ft per bird), every 3–7 days is a reasonable target for most operators. Daily moves are easier if your tractor is on skids and the terrain is relatively flat — you can pull it by hand one tractor-length forward each morning before you let the birds out. If you have a true sacrifice area — a fenced zone where you're intentionally accepting that the ground will be degraded — then yes, concentrated winter use is a common and practical approach.
