How the Worm Bin Calculator Works

The core rule of thumb for vermicomposting is straightforward: worms eat roughly half their body weight in food scraps each day under good conditions. That means one pound of worms can process about 0.5 lbs of food waste per day, or 3.5 lbs per week. The bin surface area rule follows from that: experienced vermicomposters recommend 1 square foot of bin surface for every pound of food waste you generate per week. This gives worms room to move away from fresh food, regulates moisture, and prevents anaerobic hot spots.

Bin depth is kept in the 8–12 inch range because worms are shallow feeders — they live and work in the top 6 inches of bedding, and going much deeper creates dead zones at the bottom that go anaerobic without good airflow. A bin that is wider and shallower will outperform a deep, narrow container of the same volume.

The castings estimate uses a 30% output ratio: roughly 30% of the food input by weight comes back as finished worm castings each month, after moisture loss and decomposition. Some sources cite 25–35%; 30% is a reasonable working average for a well-managed bin with a mix of food scraps and bedding carbon.

Red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) are used for the worm count estimate at approximately 1,000 worms per pound. European nightcrawlers (Eisenia hortensis) are larger — roughly 300–400 worms per pound — and process food more slowly but produce larger castings and are more tolerant of temperature variation. For most household bins, red wigglers are the right choice.

How long until I have worm castings?

Expect your first harvestable batch of castings in 2–3 months from the time you set up a new bin. The first few weeks are adjustment time: the worms are getting used to their new environment, the bedding is establishing microbial life, and populations haven't ramped up yet. By month two, a well-fed bin will be visibly producing castings throughout. The traditional harvest method is to push all the bin contents to one side, add fresh bedding and food to the empty side, and wait 2–3 weeks for worms to migrate over — then harvest the worm-free side. For larger bins, a flow-through system with a screen bottom makes harvesting continuous and much easier.

Can I use worm castings in the garden?

Worm castings are one of the most effective soil amendments available for garden use, and unlike synthetic fertilizers they cannot burn plant roots even when applied heavily. Castings are pH-neutral (around 7.0), contain beneficial microbes, water-holding polymers, plant growth hormones, and slow-release nutrients in forms plants can immediately absorb. Standard application rates are 10–20% castings by volume when blending potting soil, or a light top-dressing of about 1/2 inch worked into the surface around established plants. Do worm bins smell?

A healthy, well-managed worm bin should smell like fresh soil or a forest floor — earthy but not unpleasant. Odor problems almost always come from one of three causes. First: overfeeding. If you add more food than the worms can process in a few days, the excess rots anaerobically and produces sulfur smells. Second: too wet. Excess moisture squeezes air out of the bedding and creates anaerobic conditions; the fix is to add dry shredded cardboard or newspaper and mix it through. Third: wrong inputs — meat, dairy, citrus, or oily food will cause strong odors no matter how well-managed the bin is. If your bin smells, stop feeding for a week, add a thick layer of shredded cardboard, and check that drainage is not blocked. A well-running bin kept indoors at room temperature should be odor-free enough to keep under a kitchen sink.

What temperature do worms need?

Red wigglers thrive between 55–77°F (13–25°C), with peak activity around 70°F. They can tolerate temperatures from about 40°F up to 85°F, but outside that range feeding and reproduction slow significantly or stop. Above 90°F, worms will try to escape and can die quickly. Below 40°F, worms go dormant. European nightcrawlers are somewhat more cold-tolerant, remaining active down to around 45°F and handling outdoor conditions in moderate climates through early fall. For outdoor bins in cold climates, move the bin to an unheated garage or basement before first frost — the worm mass itself generates some heat and a well-insulated bin can stay active well into winter. Avoid direct sun on plastic bins in summer; even in mild climates, a black bin in full sun can reach lethal temperatures within hours.

Can I leave my worm bin in winter?

In USDA zones 7 and warmer, an outdoor bin in a sheltered spot (against a south-facing wall, under an overhang) can often survive winter with just an insulating layer of cardboard and leaves on top. In colder zones, bring the bin inside. A basement, garage, or mudroom that stays above 40°F works well. Reduce feeding in winter — worm metabolism slows with temperature, and overfeeding a cold bin causes rot. If you can't bring the bin indoors and temperatures will drop below freezing, you can harvest your worms and keep a smaller indoor colony through winter, then restart the outdoor bin in spring with transplanted worms. A deep bed of straw (8–12 inches) insulating the outside of a wooden bin adds meaningful cold protection in marginal climates.
